Statistics show ninety per cent of doctor visits pertain to symptoms of stress. The body can handle some stress. However, too much stress has negative effects on the body causing headaches, high blood pressure and other health problems. Taking prescription drugs for stress can have serious side effects and can be addictive. There are many natural stress remedies available without all the harmful side effects.

One of the most effective natural stress remedies is getting enough sleep. People sleep less these days then ever before struggling to balance family and work. Getting enough rest is important for the body to function properly. Lack of sleep can affect the body physically and mentally. Eight hours is the recommended amount of sleep but it varies in individuals. Try drinking a glass of warm milk; take a relaxing bath, or eating foods with tryptophan, a sleep inducing chemical found in turkey.

Exercise is an effective method for combating stress symptoms. Even small amounts of exercise are beneficial in reducing cumulative stress. Park further away from the store entrance or take stairs instead of elevators. Schedule ten-minute walks and increase your time each week. Exercising early in the day will help you sleep better at night. Consult a doctor before starting any exercise program if you have certain health conditions.

Herbs are wonderful natural stress remedies with little or no side effects. Herbs are becoming a popular alternative for standard medicine and they do not cause addictions. It may take two or three weeks before any results are noticed. Consult an herbalist or doctor before trying herbal remedies as some herbs do not mix well with some medications Aromatherapy is an ancient technique that uses essential oils to give off relaxing scents. The fragrant oils are massaged into the forehead to reduce tension. Some typical oils used in aromatherapy are, jasmine, ylang-ylang, lavender, and geranium.

Other natural stress remedies include cutting back caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. Too much caffeine and nicotine can cause insomnia so try to reduce the intake. Alcohol only makes stress worse contrary to popular belief so try to cut back on alcoholic beverages. If these natural stress remedies are not effective, see a doctor.

An excellent, but simple, method of reducing stress is to breath more slowly. People under stress tend to breath in quick, shallow breaths. Try deep, abdominal breathing...see if you don't feel your stress fading away.
